I Dress in Color when the World is Gray. Nov 8 2010

This cardigan never photographs as its true color. Hmmm.

I feel like I’ve been repeating a lot lately- cardigan, tights, dress… every day- so last night I was planning to wear something different. A cream dress toughened up with textured black tights, black boots, and a black military-style jacket. I wanted to do a little rougher version of me.(Although even that isn’t very tough. I’m too soft and girly to be grunge.)

You can see how far I got with that.

The thing is, when it’s sad and gloomy outside, I immediately want to wear color to make up for the lack of sunshine, in hopes that maybe my brightness will lure the sun out. (It must have worked; it’s sunny now.) So wearing neutrals and darks didn’t appeal to me today.

One of these days, though, I’ll start getting into the browns of fall, although I’ll probably brighten them up with oranges and yellows and reds. I can’t resist colors.

I also can’t resist skirts that swirl, or throwing leaves at the camera.
Ignore how short my legs look.
And my posing strangely with ferns.

The Owl Has Moved

IMPORTANT: Do NOT hit the “+Follow” button up there in the gray bar you have, if you’re a wordpress user. You will be following a blog that will no longer be updated. You MUST click through to the NEW site to follow, which means you’ll click the below picture and be taken to a DIFFERENT site!

I only say this because several people have been following this old blog, despite the fact that I’ve posted this post, which, if you read it, tells you to click the link or picture to get to the new site.

Again, following this blog will not get you ANY updates.

It is complete! Click on the picture to be swept away to my new site. You shouldn’t have to worry about re-subscribing to the new website unless you subscribed in this last week.  So check your inboxes in about an hour, and if you don’t get an update today titled “30 Days of Dresses: A Bit Like Alice ” then you will have to click over and re-subscribe (via email, RSS, bloglovin’, Facebook, Twitter, or… bookmark…).

And if you haven’t subscribed to my new bl0g, you should. Especially now that it’s all new and fancy, and all the posts on this one have been moved over there.

So what are you waiting for, anyway? Go check out the new site!

Friday Links (and also, it’s my birthday.)

April 27, 2012

Mr. Owl took these pictures. Of an owl. That I really, really wanted. And I shared it via my twitter feed and one of my older posts, but seeing as how I haven’t stolen Mr. Owl’s camera recently nor have we been very good lately at taking dress pictures… this is what you get. 😉

Today is my birthday! I’m 24 today, and for some reason 24 feels very… important. I don’t feel older, really, but somehow this birthday feels like the precedent to great things. The blog is growing up, I have Mr. Owl, I have a “grown up” job, and this year just feels like it will be a fantastic one.

I have to work, but after work my mom is cooking me a lovely dinner, and then my parents are taking me out to dessert with Mr. Owl, his parents, my  nieces, and one of his nephews. And my brother. And my grandma.

It’s gonna be a party.

Now, enough rambling and on to the links!

Owl-Things:

  • Baby Owls. I need one. It’s my birthday. Can I have one?
  • Also, these owl-shaped pouches are cute. And remind me of zombies. Or Frankenstein’s Monster. I don’t know why.
  • Tomorrow, to celebrate my birthday, Mr. Owl and I are going to wander Seattle. And I really want to go to this place for lunch. Can you guess why?
Weekend Art:
  • I cannot imagine how long these wire sculptures must have taken to complete!
Weekend Pretties:
  • Kate, in her polka dots, florals, and pink. So lovely!
  • And again, Kate, this time with citrus colors. (Kate has been so inspirational to me lately! I love her style.)
  • Veronika’s fluttery shirt and red skirt. Gorgeous! I really need a red skirt.

Weekend Laugh:

Weekend News:

  • This isn’t a link, but a little bit of news: for the past week and a half or so, I’ve been working on something very exciting: my very own self-hosted blog! Come Monday, you will all be redirected to the brand-new site, where I have been tweaking everything to perfection (or close). You won’t have to worry about re-subscribing; I’ve figured out how to transfer you all with (hopefully) no hassle.
  • If you don’t know what the difference between my blog now and a self-hosted site, it basically means that I pay for my own domain name as well as the ability to do anything I want with my blog design, ads, and who knows what else. Right now, I blog for free through wordpress, and I can’t edit the CSS or the layout. All I can do is make my own header and sidebar buttons. As well, with a free wordpress blog, I am not allowed to run my sponsors’ ads.
  • But now that I’m running my own site, I can do whatever I want. It’s exciting!

That’s it for today! I hope you all have a fantastic Friday!

30 Days of Dresses: Purple.

April 25, 2012

These pictures are from the weekend; it’s been drizzly and rainy since yesterday, and I haven’t felt like taking outfit pictures. In fact, yesterday I got off work and promptly changed into jeans. But I have been wearing a dress every day.

I have the sneaking feeling that I won’t be making it to 30 days. Still, ten days is pretty good for me. I never made it to ten days with the 30 for 30 challenge.

Mr. Owl liked this outfit. He’s told me before that he liked my style, but usually he’s more vocal when I wear something he doesn’t like, such as maxi-dresses (his exact words: “what do you think it is, 1865?”). I wear them anyway. Rarely, but still…

Also, one thing I have to say about this set of photos: I  hate the reflector. With a passion. It burns out my vision and is very rude. 😉

But the reflector does make the pictures look better, so I guess I can live with it.

I hope you all have a lovely Wednesday!

30 Days of Dresses: It doesn’t get any girlier than this.

April 23, 2012

I don’t think I have worn this much pink… ever. Since I was a kid. Pink has never been amongst my favorite colors, possibly because it’s hard to find a good pink for my skin tone, and possibly because I’ve always been the one who wanted to be different. If girls were supposed to love blue, I’d probably decide my favorite color was yellow.

…yellow is a good color.

But that wasn’t the point. I do love the pink of this dress. And also the bow-print. I may have to do some dress-surgery, though, because the original bodice is not flattering. I tied up the sleeves, so you can’t see how they drape normally, but they sort of just flap around like weird wings and make my shoulders look wide while the chest-area droops. Not a good look.

But with a ribbon and a little time spent fiddling with the sleeves, I got it to look halfway decent. Eventually, I’m going to hem it up to a little below the knee instead of mid-calf, and I’ll tinker with the bodice so that it fits better and looks better.

Being that it’s a very full skirt, I did have to twirl. Obviously.

I would love more dresses with quirky prints like this one, and in this fabric. I have no idea what fabric it is (I didn’t look at the tag), but it’s the perfect amount of structure and general swishiness, so it’s not too stiff or too flimsy. I love it!

And the bow-print is a definite plus.

In other news: my birthday is on Friday! And I want this. Please?

If you didn’t know, I posted this weekend’s dresses on my Facebook Page. And one or two of them, I may eventually sell. We’ll see!

I hope you all have a wonderful Monday!
